Grazie alla fattiva
collaborazione del socio Michele Carrara, il 20 e 21 ottobre un gruppo di soci VMAS ha potuto vistare il 37° Stormo Caccia ed assistere alle attività di volo sia
notturne che diurne.

20 and 21 October a group of members of VMAS could visit the 37° Stormo Caccia and watch the flying activities at night and day.

La missione operativa assegnata allo Stormo è:
attuare tutte le predisposizioni
necessarie per la sorveglianza e la difesa spazio aereo nel settore sud della N.A.T.O.
partecipare, in concorso con le altre Forze Armate, alla Difesa del territorio e delle acque territoriali, a salvaguardia da eventuali attacchi navali e terrestri.
Il 37° Stormo è costituito dal
10° Gruppo Caccia Intercettori
e dal
18° Gruppo Caccia Intercettori
che operano, per le missioni di intercettazione ed addestramento, con velivolo F-16A ADF ed F-16B.
Per esigenze di collegamenti è assegnata inoltre al 37° Stormo la
637° Squadriglia Collegamenti
.
Nella Base è dislocato poi l'82° Centro Combat S.A.R., che svolge attività di ricerca e soccorso anche a favore della popolazione civile o delle unità navali in
difficoltà nei mari adiacenti. Esso impiega l'elicottero HH-3F, idoneo alle ricerche a largo raggio in mare.
La Base ospita inoltre il Comando F.O.B. (Forward Operating Base) con compiti
di supporto tecnico-operativo per i velivoli AWACS, che svolgono missioni di sorveglianza dello Spazio Aereo,
Dal 37° Stormo, che svolge anche la funzione di Comando di Circoscrizione Aeronautica e di Presidio Militare, dipendono infine il Distaccamento Aeroportuale di
Pantelleria ed il Distaccamento Aeronautico di Lampedusa

The operational mission assigned to the Wing is :
implement all the settings necessary to monitor and defend airspace in the southern aerea of NATO
participate, with the other Armed Forces, to the defense of the territory and territorial waters, to safeguard against naval and land attacks.
The 37th Wing is formed by the 10 ° Gruppo Caccia Intercettori and 18 ° Gruppo Caccia Intercettori, operating for their interception and training
missions, the airplane F-16A ADF and F-16B.
For links is also assigned to the 37th Stormo the 637° Squadriglia Collegamenti.
On the Base is located the 82° Centro Combat SAR, which carries out search and rescue activity , also for the benefit of the civilian population
